Sanctuary #1

Spray paint on 3/4 inch plywood

18 x 24 inches

Inspiration: I spent some years as a spotted owl biologist in the early to late 1990’s, allowing me to develop a deep respect and familiarity for with growth forests and the societal conflicts associated with them. This painting emerged from a recent long camping trip with my 5 year old daughter. She kept finding large insects at campsites that she would name and carry around with her. We had long talks about the clear cuts we were encountering. It is difficult to explain the reasoning behind that sort of habitat devastation to such a small child. Robot with a saw blade – Small girl hiding with a bug.
