Oil Pastel on Archival Paper
18.5 x 22.5 inches
2015
This piece was commissioned by close friends that came to visit us in New Zealand. During their exploration of the North Island they found the region of Northland, the Bay of Islands in particular, to be their favorite part of NZ. The painting is a work of fiction, informed by a handful of photos supplied by our guests. After visiting the location myself, I was visually stunned by the colors, both of the water as well as the surrounding hills. As in other parts of the North Island, in the springtime the pasture land of the hills take on a hue of hot chartreuse that is hard to believe. These views often feel like a work of fiction. I tried to depict the strange colors and the sense of surrealism imposed by the landscape.
