Orthocone with Victrola

Spray paint on 3/4 inch plywood

12 x 24 inches

2013

Inspiration: Sci-fi novel inspired deep consideration of time / space distortion. I loved mixing the idea of the shell-like bell on the victrola with a marine setting, and I had been exploring ammonites and orthocones for a unit I was putting together for a biology class on the history of life. The landscape is post-apocolyptic. Orthocones date back 200 million years ago, minimum, and could grow to be enormous! Victrolas were commonly used before 1910. Traditional Japanese woodblock prints of waves and clouds had some influence on this piece.

This is one of my first stencil-based spray pantings. At this early stage of experimenting with this medium, I made more than one version using different colors.
