The bright yellow and orange section of this painting is my rendition of a lichen called Xanthoria polycarpa. This species is common on tree branches in Portland and our surrounding forests. The Xanthoria in the photo below is living on the pagoda tree in my front yard in SE Portland, OR.
The bug in the painting is my own fictional creation. There are no beetles (that I’m aware of) that have an articulated proboscis.
