This is a painting of a rupturing “bio-sphere” with a pair of Fender’s Blue butterflies cruising by.
This piece was created using the decalcomania method.
See Decalcomania.
Fender’s Blue butterflies, Icaricia icarioides fenderi, are an Oregon species that were believed to have gone extinct in the 1930’s. They were rediscovered in 1989 living in one of the last vestiges of the Willamette Valley wild prairie habitats. Less than 1% of these wild prairies remain, the habitat being developed for agriculture and cities.
Fender’s Blue Butterflies are an Endangered Species.
In this painting, a male Fender’s Blue pursues a female beneath a bursting and erupting biosphere.
